With the new year just around the corner, now is the perfect time to reevaluate your job search technique. Here are 3 surefire ways to boost your job search and ensure success in 2017!
1. Upgrade Your Resume
Take a good look at your resume. Does it accurately reflect who you are currently as a professional? Does it reflect the spirit of the industry you wish to work in—i.e. creative, technically-advanced, traditional, etc.? Is it organized, errorless, and easy to read? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, your resume is in need of a major upgrade. Before the new year hits, take some time to carefully review your resume and make any necessary changes. Do your homework. Decide what specific roles you wish to acquire in the new year, review a variety of job descriptions with those specific job titles, and tailor your resume accordingly. Take note of any keywords that appear frequently throughout similar job descriptions, and try to incorporate them into your resume. [Of course, you should only do this if the keywords serve as an honest reflection of your own professional background and experience.]
2. Connect with Recruiters
Professional networking sites (such as LinkedIn) are a great way to connect with recruiters online. Take advantage of these networking sites. Stay in contact with recruiters and hiring managers. Recruiters are there to help connect you with new opportunities that fit your skills and interest. They may not always have a position for you right away, but who’s to say that a great opportunity won’t arise in the near future? Don’t be afraid to reach out to recruiters, or to let them know that you are interested and available for work. It’s a very small step that could have a tremendously large impact. Keeping your name at the top of a recruiter’s mind is always a good idea for active job seekers, and it will certainly come in handy when they come across that one special opportunity that’s just right for you.
3. Target Specific Companies
- Step 1: Grab a pen and paper.
- Step 2: Write down 15 companies you would love to work for in the new year.
- Step 3: Narrow that list down to your top 10 choices.
- Step 4: Now, narrow that list down to your top 5 choices.
- Step 5: Focus your job search on targeting these 5 amazing companies.
Sounds simple enough, right? Sometimes, job searching can seem so overwhelming because we are helplessly throwing our energy everywhere instead of focusing on one thing (or one company) at a time. Targeting specific companies gives you more control over the opportunities that come your way. By focusing solely on companies that you have already established interested in, you are searching proactively vs. reactively. Once you’ve narrowed your list down to your top five choices, research them one by one. Tailor your resume to match the company’s brand, style and mission. Visit their website to see if they have any current openings that fit your experience. Lastly, look for contacts who currently work at that company, and connect with them.
